Take a closer look and decide for yourself: The Groovy Yurts platforms are fully insulated, transportable and easy to assemble.
The SIP panel (structural insulated platform panel) principle is based on a “sandwich” structure, made of 2 sheets of plywood (we use exterior grade ⅜'' sheathing on the bottom side and 1/2'' sanded aspen hardwood plywood on the interior top side) with 2” of white EPS foam. Panels measure a maximum of 4’x 8’ and are assembled with a tongue and groove connection that we have created for easy assembly. Platform assembly can be completed in under an hour (substructure not included).
A big advantage to this system is that it is light and transportable, while also being very strong, rigid, and durable. It requires only a basic substructure to support it. Our platform should be installed on parallel beams, in 4’ increments. On a fairly flat surface, the beams can simply be made of 4″x 4″ treated wood, leveled directly on the ground or on cement blocks. On uneven terrain, a substructure can be assembled with 2″ x 8″ beams on a few cement pillars, blocks, or even screw piers.

This ratchet strap is used to tighten the platform during assembly. It comes in two different lengths. For platforms that measure above 22’ in diameter, two straps must be used. It can be left in place after install to guarantee that the platform stays tight and together, or you can use your own ratchet straps. If you have opted for our set-up assistance, we will have these on hand for your initial set-up.
The platform can be weather treated on both sides. For the bottom, we offer a water seal that protects from mold and fungus and helps to control humidity.. On the top, we offer our standard dark brown stain and varnish combination to protect from everyday wear, and give the floor of the yurt a beautiful hardwood appearance. A lighter stain color is available upon request. These treatments are not included in the base price of the platform.
While traditional Mongolian yurts of the past did not make use of platforms like this, we know that using a SIP platform will help to keep your yurt warm in the winter, and cool in the summer, ensuring an enjoyable yurt experience. Take a look at our platform pricing below.
We are happy to share some tips and tricks for preparing a substructure for your yurt.
There are a variety of approaches to design and materials that you can use when building your substructure. From a deck frame, to a square deck, to strawbales and earthbags, the possibilities will depend on your budget and needs.
The key is that your substructure is well-leveled and elevated off the ground by at least 6” to encourage ventilation.
If you are receiving delivery with set-up assistance, your substructure must be ready ahead of the arrival of one of our set-up experts. If you are building your own platform, it must also be ready and well-leveled.
